Legacurry Presbyterian Church was opened for services by Rev Dr Henry
Cooke on 27th March 1844, the first minister Rev Phineas Whiteside
having been ordained to the charge in August 1841. The congregation
was established and the property maintained and improved through the
course of several ministries.
Some current members still recall the Rev TJK Rankin who arrived in 1910.
During the First World War he did a tour of duty as did 23 other members
of the congregation, 3 of whom did not return. The long ministry of
Rev Rankin saw a change of manse,, centenary services and two world
wars. In 1945 World War II ended and electricity came to the
countryside. After a 39 year ministry Rev Rankin died in 1949 at the age
of 65.
The ministry of our present Minister Emeritus Rev John McCaughan and his
wife Mollie saw the beginnings of the Boy's Brigade, Girl's Brigade, what
is now the PWA, a Table-Tennis Club and various other activities. A
Christian Stewardship campaign in the 1960's brought new vigour both to
the congregation and to Rev McCaughan's ministry. His dream of having
a new and adequate Church Hall began to take shape when a site beside
the Church was purchased in 1982. After two lengthy ministries the short
ministry of Rev William Campbell from 1984 to 1990 saw the completion
and opening of the Main Hall.
The 1990's began with the 150th Anniversary of
the congregation, the Flower Festival in 1991
and the development of a youth club.
